Vegetable Targeting
Given: A length of pipe 6" in diameter, 10 rubber bands, 100 toothpicks, a small roll of duct tape, 6 -1 ft. lengths of 1/3" dowel rod,
2 cardboard boxes (at least 1.5' x 1.5'), toilet plunger, a small novelty child's gold stick, 5 sheets of plain white paper,
a box of spaghetti, and 50 potatoes
Setup: There will be a dart style target on the floor. The target will have 10 different scoring areas, and will be 10 feet in diameter.
The outer ring (1 point) will be the widest (3ft) and the innermost ring (10 points) will be a circle 8" in diameter.
The middle 8 rings will become smaller as the point value increases
Task: The team will have 4 minutes to construct, with the given materials, as many simple machines or tools as possible (at least 2 different tools). When the 4 minute building period is over, the one minute solving period will begin.
The judges will notify the team when they have 30 seconds left to build and when the 1 minute period begins.
During the solving period, using the machines/tools, they built during the building period to somehow convey up to the 50 potatoes onto the target (potatoes may be cut into smaller pieces). Up to 6 time outs may be called by the team during the 1 minute period, during which the judges will stop the stopwatch, record the point values for each of the launched potatoes and remove them from the site.
Time will then continue until the next time out.
Potatoes will be scores by the lowest point value they touch. For instance, if a potato is half in the 10 point section of the target and half in the 9 point section, 9 points will be scored for that potato.

Given: 2 Styrofoam cups, 35 toothpicks, 1 piece of cardboard, 10 mailing labels, 1 ft of masking tape
You have 3 minutes to discuss and 5 minutes to build a structure that can hold as many pennies as possible. This structure must be at least 1/2" off the ground

Given: As assortment of 8 kinds of wrapped candies heaped on a plate, spoons, knives, chopsticks, string
Marked on a floor in 4 corners are 3' x 3' squares. There are containers in each of the squares and a student must stand within each square. No one may leave a square after entering and no one else may enter that square or reach in.
The task is to sort as much candy as possible into the 4 corner containers using a common relationship for each container (shape, color, transparency, taste). Students may not touch the candy with their bodies, but use only the materials provided. Talking is allowed.

Given: 1 sharp pencil, 3 paper plates, 15 paper lips, 30 toothpicks, 12" masking tape and 1 sheet of paper
Build a tower as tall as possible that will be free standing as long as possible.
You have 2 minutes to think and 4 minutes to build. No talking is allowed

Given: 1 box of toothpicks, 1 ball of clay, 1 piece of cardboard with a 6" diameter circle drawn in the center
Using the materials provided, in 5 minutes time build the largest structure possible
Scoring: 1 point for each inch of width at the widest point
5 points for each inch of height -20 point penalty if structure touches inside the circle
Multiply the total points for width by total points for height less penalties for final score

Given: One sheet of paper and as many rolls of tape as possible
Make a giant ball of tape and come up with as many uses for the ball of tape as possible
Ex: The team mascot

Given: 77 straws, 1 egg and a 3 1/2 " piece of tape
Make a structure to support the egg

Build a card house and see how much weight it will hold

Given: (to each person) 4 mini marshmallows, 2 large marshmallows, Styrofoam cup, and 6 toothpicks
Each team member must make something our of these items and tell what it is.
Pass your creation on to the person to your left
They add their invention to it and tell what it is
Give everyone a turn

Given 6 eggs, 2" piece of string, 3 toothpicks, 1 envelope, ball point pen, 1 napkin, 1 straw, 1 comb and 2 paper clips
The 6 eggs will be moves across a table one at a time
They can be moved using only the items on the list. Each item can be used only once
